365 Poems in 365 Days: Old World

The world has always been old
A bare handful of the tens of billions
Of people have ever entered a land -
Crossing the mountain, sailing the strait -
Where no one has lived before
For the rest of us there are remains
Ruins and graveyards, discarded tools
The left behind remnants of our ancestors
Scattered across the man-made landscape
The world has always been old

Number 140 is a reminder that just about everywhere people live, there are thousands of years of pre-history.
