I Watch Films: The Mummy

New to me in 2018, The Mummy (2017).

There’s a fun, knockabout supernatural action adventure here, an Indiana Jones knockoff or maybe a successor to, um, The Mummy and its sequels*, family friendly-ish. There’s also a dark action thriller that wants to flirt with horror, and has a bunch of spooky effects and tense action sequences. There’s also some kind of secret organisation to hunt monsters, an introduction to the (sigh) Dark Universe sequence of films, so the ending must be left open.

This is all of those films stirred together into a weird, incoherent mix. I mean I quite liked it on a scene-by-scene basis and Cruise is watchable; a fine comic actor whose character is getting dunked on thanks to his own flaws. But then we’re faced with the question – who is the real monster, Dr Henry Jekyll who wants to kill Cruise for the greater good, or Edward Hyde who wants to kill him for the greater evil?

Actually when you put it like that...

Watch This: Some fun, dispensable action adventure. London gets wrecked which is always nice.
Don’t Watch This: If you’d prefer a wackier mummy film.
Also: Did you know there were some wackier mummy films?

* Brendan Fraser’s still working you know. He’s younger than Tom Cruise you know.
